How to Pack a Pallet

It is possible to avoid damaged freight if you properly pack and palletize any shipment originating from your manufacturing plant. Here are a few different tips to assist you in preventing damaged freight.

Stacking Materials to Minimize Damaged Freight

The stacking method you choose to employ will need to depend on the content of any boxes.
If a box is rigid and solid:

  • If a box is filled with products like paint cans or books, an interlocking stacking technique is preferred. For this type of stacking method, the boxes are stacked as if they are bricks, with the weight of one reusable plastic container being at least partially supported by more than one of the boxes below. This technique for stacking provides the reusable box stack improved stability.

If the contents of a reusable box are soft or fragile:

  • If a reusable plastic box is filled with inventory that is either soft or fragile, the column stacking technique is the best option to utilize. If boxes are stacked using a column stacking method, several columns are formed on a plastic pallet; the weight of every box is supported by the container beneath it. This stacking method improves box strength by up to 50% when compared to the interlocking method of stacking.

Avoid all overhang when stacking reusable plastic totes:

  • Ensure that stacked reusable plastic boxes do not hang over the edge of a plastic pallet. Reusable pallet overhang will reduce container strength by up to 32%. Any box overhand also significantly increases the risk of damage to freight by other shipments.

It is always a top-notch idea to keep the top of the stack flat:

  • Maintaining a flat top will protect the hauled freight from potentially being damaged by any boxes that are stacked on top inadvertently.
